I nearly stepped on a snake this morning. He was a couple of feet long and dust brown. He was just hanging out in the middle of the path to the car. I was only a couple of steps away from stepping on him when I saw him and stopped dead and shrieked a little. I must have startled him just as much, since he zipped across the yard at top speed and disappeared into the grass by the fence. I didn't get a good enough look to have any idea what kind he was. It's the first time I've seen a snake around the house. There are toads, and roadrunners, and the occasional squirrel, and once in a while there are black widows under the back stairs, but snakes are new. He might have been disturbed by all the construction going on behind the house.
Anyway, I went back to packing the car to go to the end-of-summer pool party. That was fun, although uncle K and I managed to scratch each other up a bit while wrestling around trying to steal pool noodles from each other. I swear, being in the same swimming pool as him is like having an annoying older brother. I should have dug out the water canons so we could harass each other from a distance instead, but I think they are up in the attic.
